Position Purpose

The Unit Leader participates in the implementation of Girl Scout programming, ensures safety of the campers, and encourages the success of every camper. Unit Leaders are the primary caregivers for campers during camp. The Unit Leader is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, carrying out activities, and guiding campers in their personal growth.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.

    • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.

      • Assure campers are always properly supervised.

        • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.

          • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.

            • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.

              • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.

                • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.

                  • Assist in program areas such as archery, rock wall climbing and all camp activities, as directed.

                    • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.

                      • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.

                        • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Director.

                          • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with Health and Inclusion Director and/or Program Specialist when appropriate.

                            • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Operations Director.

                              • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.

                                • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.

                                  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.

                                    • Bring concerns to administrative staff in a timely fashion and in good faith

                                      • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

                                        • Attend and participate in daily meetings.

                                          • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.

                                            • Provide check in/out support and provide outstanding customer service to families.

                                              • Other duties as assigned.

                                                Skills/ Experience/ Other

                                                Qualifications & Requirements

                                                • Must be 18 years of age or a high school graduate by the start of camp.
                                                • Must be available for 9 weeks of day camp and pre-camp trainings.
                                                • Documented experience teaching or interacting with youth programs.
                                                • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.

                                                  • Ability to pass a background check.
                                                  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.

                                                    • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity, and honesty in all professional situations.
                                                    • Possess a positive attitude with strong work ethic, integrity. honesty, and sense of humor.

                                                      • Must be flexible, adaptable, and willing to thrive in an ever changing/fast-paced environment
                                                      • Develop and maintain sensitivity to employee diversity in the workplace.
                                                      • Behave in ways that demonstrate respectful treatment of other employees, volunteers, and Girl Scouts.

                                                      • Compliance with State-mandated reporter requirements is an essential function of this position.

                                                        • Abide by a duty of loyalty to GSGLA and give preference to the business and mission of GSGLA over that of other organizations and your own business interests.

                                                          Physical Requirements & Certifications

                                                          • Ability to visually monitor and physically assist campers weighing up to 200 lbs.
                                                          • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of themselves or others.

                                                          • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
                                                          • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
